In this blog, we’ll explore everything you need to know about visiting Laitlum Canyon—how to get there, the best time to visit, things to do, and why this place should be on your travel bucket list.

The Meaning Behind the Name: Laitlum

The name Laitlum comes from the Khasi language, where

  •  “Lait” means “end”
  •  “Lum” means “hills”

Together, it translates to the end of hills, which perfectly describes the dramatic cliffs that seem to drop off into nothingness, offering an awe-inspiring view of the valley below.

How to Reach Laitlum Canyon

By Air

The nearest airport is Shillong Airport (Umroi Airport), about 40 km away. However, Guwahati International Airport (120 km away) is better connected with flights from major Indian cities. From there, you can hire a cab or take a shared taxi to Shillong.

By Road

  • From Shillong: Laitlum Canyon is around 35 km (1.5hour drive) from Shillong.
  •  Route: Take the ShillongSohra (Cherrapunji) Road and turn towards Rangthong Village near the Laitlum checkpoint.
  •  Last Stretch: The final 4 km is a steep, narrow road—best suited for bikes or 4×4 vehicles. Alternatively, you can trek this part.

Public Transport

Shared taxis (known as Sumos) are available from Shillong’s Police Bazaar to Rangthong Village, but the last stretch may require a short hike.
